Prestwick Golf Club
The spread of the railways was instrumental in developing golf in Ayrshire in the 19th century. In fact, our first tee is only about 15 yards from the platform of Prestwick Town railway station.
"Our first Captain in 1851, the Earl of Eglinton, was a wealthy landowner over whose land the railway ran. He had given permission for the line to be laid on condition that he could stop trains to ‘give him a lift’. He used this frequently to come to play golf at Prestwick."
